Special Effects: Ray Harryhausen
Now here's an oddity. A civil war balloon goes down on a mysterious island in the Pacific Ocean, leaving its crew stranded. They encounter all sorts of giant animals, including a a ten foot tall chicken and a monstrous crab. It turns out that Captain Nemo from "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" (1954) is responsible for creating the monstrosities in an attempt to eliminate world hunger. But when a volcano on the island erupts, the heroes manage to escape while the Nautilus disappears, presumably destroyed. Harryhausen's effects are wonderful, but you can't help laughing at the giant chicken. It's way too silly.
