Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (1971)

Rating: **
Cast: Gene Wilder

Roald Dahl's wonderful novel doesn't translate very well to the silver screen in this adaptation. A group of children win a contest to visit the wacky candy factory of the eccentric Willy Wonka, and several mishaps eliminate most of the kids along the way. Kooky Gene Wilder plays Willy Wonka with exuberance and flair, but the set pieces and effects aren't very memorable or effective, and there's far too much singing. It does have its moments though. I'm sure watching this film with the aid of pharmaceuticals would enhance the experience.
