They Live (1988)

Rating: **
Director: John Carpenter
Cast: Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster

A disappointing outing from John Carpenter. The premise is neat, but the treatment is just too plodding. Rowdy Roddy Piper discovers that aliens are living among us and subliminally controlling us for unknown reasons. He takes it upon himself to expose them to the world so that humanity can strike back. Some neat visuals here and there, but it's most noteworthy for containing the most ridiculous fight scene ever filmed. Piper and Keith David slug it out in an alley for maybe five minutes, in full cornball pro wrestling style. That's enough to either make you laugh out loud or stop watching the movie altogether. This film marks the last semi-decent project that Carpenter worked on.
