The Quest (1996)

Rating: **
Director: Jean Claude Van Damme
Cast: Jean Claude Van Damme, Roger Moore

Jean Claude Van Damme's directorial debut produces a remake of his own "Bloodsport" (1987), except this time it's an early 1900's period piece drama. A restrained Van Damme shows us that he can actually act, and the first hour of the film follows his harsh and tragic tale. With the devious aid of gold digging Roger Moore, he manages to enter an elite fighting tournament featuring the world's greatest fighters (sound familiar?). Things finally start to heat up in the last twenty minutes when the fighters actually start fighting, and for the most part the action is pretty good. Too bad the rest of the film is only so-so. Roger Moore adds an air of clout to the film, but it's really only average entertainment.
