Jason And The Argonauts (1963)

Rating: ****
Special Effects: Ray Harryhausen
Cast: Todd Armstrong, Honor Blackman

Probably Ray Harryhausen's finest work, this film takes a few liberties with Greek mythology to tell the story of Jason's quest for the golden fleece. In order to reclaim his father's kingdom, Jason (Todd Armstrong) must retrieve a magical golden fleece from a far away land. Luckily, he's got the goddess Hera (Honor Blackman) on his side, and she grants him five requests which he takes advantage of in dire times of need. Jason assembles a legendary crew (including Hercules) and sets off for a series of fantastic adventures. The stop-motion work is incredible and this film features the most fantastic scene of its kind ever filmed - a dazzling sword fight between three men and seven animated skeletons! It's truly amazing. Lots of fun all around, and lots of cool monsters.
