Grosse Point Blank (1996)

Rating: ***
Cast: John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Dan Ackroyd, Benny Urquidez

A quirky comedy about a neurotic hitman (John Cusack) who goes back to his ten year high school reunion. Naturally, trouble follows him into town in the form of rival hitmen Dan Ackroyd and Benny "The Jet" Urquidez. In between the offbeat humor and awkwardness of Cusack running into old friends and his jilted high school ex-girlfriend (Minnie Driver), the film is refreshingly sprinkled with exciting and well crafted action scenes. There are a couple of good gun fights, and Cusack gets into a well executed fight with karate champion Benny Urquidez that's about as good as Hollywood fight scenes get. The film is fun and fresh, but Cusack's character is so uncomfortable that I ended up feeling uncomfortable as well. Definitely a mixed bag, but worth checking out.
