Double Dragon (1994)

Rating: *
Director: James Yukich
Cast: Mark Dacascos, Scott Wolf, Robert Patrick, Alyssa Milano, Julia Nickson, Al Leong, Jeff Imada

No good. This is an incredibly juvenile adaptation of the "Double Dragon" video game, featuring the Lee brothers, Jimmy and Billy (Mark Dacascos and Scott Wolf). Robert Patrick makes a good creepy villain, and he's obsessed with finding the mystical halves of the double dragon talisman, which will give him the ultimate power over body and soul. It's up to Jimmy, Billy, and their mentor Satori (pretty Julia Nickson) to keep this from happening, and after Satori's demise, they enlist the aid of cute and spunky Maria of the Power Corps (Alyssa Milano). Unfortunately the whole tone of the film is childish and it relies too heavily on stupid dialog and goofy pratfalls to move the plot along. With the exception of one outstanding fight between Mark Dacascos and Al Leong, the fighting performances are embarrassing, and therein lies the film's major flaw. If you're going to make a movie about a fighting video game, you should concentrate your efforts on the fighting scenes, and make sure you have actors with an appropriate amount of martial arts skills to get the job done. In short, don't make fighting movies without fighters. Duh. I expected more from the talented Dacascos, but he really wasn't given much to work with.
