The Black Hole (1979)

Rating: ***
Music: John Barry
Cast: Anthony Perkins, Ernest Borgnine, Joseph Bottoms, Robert Forster, Yvette Mimieux, Maxamillian Schell

The crew of the U.S.S. Palamino discover a giant black hole in deep space. They also find a derelict spaceship in orbit around it, seemingly unaffected by its gravitational influence, so they fly in and check it out. Once onboard they find out that the entire crew has been turned into zombies by the mad scientist who's running the ship (Maximillian Schell), and our heroes start getting picked off one by one in "freak accidents." Most off them manage to escape through the black hole while the remains of the U.S.S. Cygnus get smashed beyond recognition. The spectacular effects are what save this Disney film from being too cheesy, sentimental, and tedious.
