Beetlejuice (1988)

Rating: ***
Director: Tim Burton
Music: Danny Elfman
Cast: Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Alec Baldwin, Jeffrey Jones

A little too strange and over-the-top for my tastes, but still a lot of fun. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis are recently deceased ghosts who are trying to come to grips with their deadness. An obnoxious family (Catherine O'Hara, Jeffrey Jones, and devastatingly delicious Winona Ryder) moves into their house and the ghosts try, unsuccessfully, to scare them away. Out of desperation, they call up a nasty spirit named "Beetlejuice" (an out of control Michael Keaton) and all sorts of devilry is unleashed. Great looking sets, makeup, and effects, and some of it is pretty damn funny. A lot of it, however, is just plain bizarre and tedious.
