The Beastmaster (1982)

Rating: ***
Cast: Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts, John Amos, Rip Torn

A fun and cheesy sword and sorcery flick about a guy who can communicate with animals (Marc Singer) and his quest to destroy an evil wizard (Rip Torn). Tanya Roberts comes along for the ride as a scantily clad slave girl and offers the older boys in the audience something to focus their attention on. Good clean wholesome fun, but the execution is far more juvenile than I tend to like (a common complaint for the entire fantasy genre). The animal treatment is a bit questionable, even though it was monitored by the American Humane Society, and the music blatantly rips off "Battlestar Galactica" (1978), which is a constant distraction.
