The Rapeman Of Edo (Japan 1996)

Rating: **

More weird shit from Japan. This is a spin-off of the popular "Rapeman" series which takes place in feudal Japan instead of modern Japan. The main character is a very nice and unassuming man who works at a local bath house with a really cool female manager. But like Clark Kent or Bruce Wayne, he has a darker side - he dons a Batman-like rubber suit, complete with a cape and bizarre ninja weapons, and punishes female criminals by raping them. Without subtitles, the film is very confusing, but it seems that a nasty cult of decadent (Catholic?) nuns frames Rapeman for murder, and he must clear his name by raping the Mother Superior into submission. Uh-huh. Shot on video, the film has high production values, looks great, and has a strong and interesting cast (apart from Rapeman's ultra-annoying sidekick). The tone is no-nonsense and matter-of-fact, but there's some campy black humor thrown in to ensure that it's all for fun. For the most part, the women are very attractive - especially the rape victims. There's a fair amount of softcore sex and topless women (well orchestrated, I might add), and surprisingly the rape scenes don't come off as being mean or nasty. In fact, it seems like all of the women are enjoying it. Go figure. Pubic hair is all optically blurred - a really annoying effect that should have been applied to several of the girls' hairy armpits as well. We also get to see the medieval version of a strap-on dildo. Very interesting...
