Prince Of The Sun (HK 1990)

Rating: **
Martial Arts Director: Yuen Tak
Cast: Cynthia Rothrock, Conan Lee, Sheila Chan, Jeffrey Falcon, Lam Ching Ying

What a mixed bag this is! Sort of a Hong Kong version of "The Golden Child" swinging wildly from vicious kung fu battles to inane slapstick, and sometimes combining the two! Buddhist monks Lam Ching Ying and Cynthia Rothrock (!) are trying to protect a young boy who is the reincarnation of the living Buddha, from a group of nasty evil monks. A moronic Conan Lee and swindling bitch Sheila Chan also get involved with the child and end up saving him in the end. The fighting is great - perhaps some of Cynthia's best. The other players are awesome as well. Lam Ching Ying, Jeffrey Falcon, and Conan Lee are given great opportunities to show their stuff. Unfortunately, the majority of the film is based around the pratfall antics of Conan Lee and an unusually sexy Sheila Chan. She's perfect for the role and handles the goofy slapstick material with flair, but apart from a handful of genuinely hilarious moments, the humor falls flat. The film ends with a barrage of cheesy special effects and kung fu fighting, which helps redeem the dreadful middle portion of the movie, but by that point, who cares?
