Bodyguard Kiba (Japan 1973)

Rating: **
Alternate Title: "Karate Killer"
Cast: Sonny Chiba, Maki Mizuhara, cameo by Etsuko Shiomi

A sequel in name only, as Naoto Kiba (Sonny Chiba) surrenders to the police and forsakes his karate teachings. After a brief jail term, Kiba is immediately hired to be a bodyguard for a crime boss who wants to cut ties with his partners. He initially refuses, but then sees it as an opportunity to get revenge against the rival school that injured his sister (Etsuko Shiomi). He also gets mixed up with a pretty Okinawan girl (Maki Mizuhara) and her ex-con boyfriend, which leads to an inevitable conflict of interests. Kiba's employer eventually turns on him, forcing him to kill everyone in sight.

It really is a terrible film, which is unfortunate because the opening fight scene is very good and quite promising. In it, Sonny Chiba pulls off some very impressive stunt work and it's very entertaining. A very cute 17-year old Etsuko Shiomi also shows up in a very brief cameo before effectively disappearing for the rest of the film, which is disappointing. Sadly, after the opening credits, the film completely falls apart and becomes totally uninteresting until the final violent showdown. But even that isn't very satisfying. It's like they spent the entire budget on the opening scene, and the rest of the film is from a totally different project.

While the sex, drugs, violence, nudity, murder, rape, and general depravity are considerably toned down in this outing, they're still present and the film makes no attempts to hide its exploitation roots. But the execution is poor and sometimes downright baffling. The film also attempts to turn Kiba into a nice guy, which backfires spectacularly. It's no surprise that the series ended with this entry.
