Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins (1995)

Rating: *

Ack! Kill me now. This is one of the most dreadfully animated features I've ever seen. It's a wretched combination of crappy 3D computer animation and really lame cel animated characters. Interspersed throughout the story are several totally computer rendered tournament fights, and they're not TOO terrible. The story is basically a lowest common denominator retelling of the Mortal Kombat mythology, pitting Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade against Shang Tsung and his cronies. It's not even an hour long and it seems to last an eternity. Truly awful. The best part is a bonus featurette on the making of the live action "Mortal Kombat" (1995) film, featuring interviews with Robin Shou (Liu Kang), Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa (Shang Tsung), Pat Johnson (martial arts choreographer), Paul Anderson (director), Lawrence Kasanoff (producer), Linden Ashby (Johnny Cage), Bridgette Wilson (Sonya Blade), and Alison Savitch (special effects).
