Love, Death & Robots (2019)

Rating: ****

Contains 18 episodes

"Love, Death & Robots" is an adult-oriented animated science fiction horror anthology. The episodes are short, which allows for minimal exposition and maximum action, and can leave your brain scrambling to sort things out. Many of the stories feel like they came straight from the pages of "Heavy Metal" magazine, and there's a strong emphasis on sex, violence, and the horrors of the human condition. The animation is astounding for the most part, but there are a few episodes that are visually uninteresting. Similarly, the writing is mostly very good, but the dialog can be a tad grating at times, and the nature of the material often tends to be male-centric and degrading to women. Overall, I found the series to be quite enjoyable, and even when an episode doesn't click, they're short enough that they don't overstay their welcome. I found "The Secret War", "Lucky 13", and "Beyond the Aquila Rift" to be particularly compelling and memorable.
